In the early 20th century, a "hobo" was simply a traveling worker – and they even had their own newspaper!

First they sic robot dogs on them, now they force them into asylums for years. Hawaii is not great when dealing with their hobos.

North Lauderdale is a solidly working class town but we don't have bums. Every now and then there will be one at the Walmart but I never see panhandlers on street corners. I saw more in rich Boca Raton when I lived with my dad cause they had the town panhandler. It was always the same 1 guy. I get sleepers in units from time to time, maybe 3 or so per year but that comes with the business, even storage places in Palm Beach get that.

But I have had a new issue over the past few day. 2 days ago I went to throw out my trash (I've been using some PTO the past couple days so I wasn't on the clock) and there was a dude chilling at the corner of the fence. My place is one giant rectangle. The part closest to the main road is all my apartment and units and a small bit of fencing at the north end of the property right before it goes into a canal. This guy was outside the fence but still on PS property.

I was nice but told him he couldn't be there during business hours cause it was a bad look for customers. He was cool. He didn't seem insane in the membrane, or insane in the brain and agreed to leave. As I was walking back to my apartment I felt really bad and went back and gave him $10. Removing sleepers from units is bad enough and I hate it. This guy didn't even have enough to sleep in a unit. He was sleeping on the dirt right up against a canal.

I shouldn't have told him not during business hours because he came back that night. I then realized I had to kick him out for good. But I felt really bad about it so I put a homeless kit together for him. A backpack with water, food, a poncho, trash bags (since I didn't have a tarp), a bunch of ziplocks, and a huge thing of toiletries with everything except a travel toothpaste cause I couldn't find one. But like a toothbrush, soap, wipes, deodorant, and a bunch of other stuff. I didn't have any cash so I took a bunch of change and put it in another ziplock for him too.

That morning I went to give it to him and he was already walking away so I caught up to him and apologized for saying only business hours and gave him the backpack of goodies and explained he cant be coming back. He again was very cool about it. He was clearly kinda embarrassed which I totally get cause I would be too. He said like he just doen't have a place to sleep but was going to shower then go to work. That was very likely not happening but whatever. I told him I'd be happy to try to help more and he could stop by the office while I'm at work.

He said he'd come back for the rest of his stuff and that would be that. Below are pics of where he was staying, him without showing him really and the shit I put in the bag he has on his right shoulder.

Anyway that was that. It wasn't fun.

Also I want to brag about how great a guy I am cause I was trying to help him out but actually I kinda feel shitty about it cause I really only was doing all that to bribe him to gtfo.

Ouch is one of six songs on The Tragically Hip's 2021 EP Saskadelphia. Five of the songs were recorded during the sessions for their 1991 album Road Apples. The EP also includes this live version of Montréal from December 7, 2000:
