If I remember correctly, Slacker originally had a plan to deliver content via satellite.
Did they give up on this completely in favour of wireless caching?

Basically, yes. They had a plan to refresh the stations by satellite in the car, but decided it would be easier to just do it through a plug-in, and by wireless caching with smartphone devices like the iPhone (still waiting on that one) and the Blackberry.

I think the original announcement was almost abandoned right after they were released. The only reason the sat refresh was even considered was to compete head to head with sat radio. It was quickly learned that it was totally unnecessary as part of their business model. They did the right thing! Just like getting away from selling hardware is the right thing!
