Let's Put The X In Sex. I now you're all wondering what was the first number-one song with a title containing the letter X. It was Billy Murray's Alexander, which, per record industry magazine Talking Machine World, was the best-selling phonograph record for three weeks in October 1904. Dressed as a woman, Murray often sang the song in Vaudeville shows. Hey, at least he didn't wear blackface! Between 1903 and 1927, Murray had 169 chart hits (including duets), 157 top tens and 18 number ones.

George Harrison. Tom Petty. Bob Dylan. Jeff Lynne. Roy Orbison. And End Of The Line stalled at #63 on the Billboard Hot 100. It fared better on the Cash Box Top 100, peaking at #53. It should have been top-ten. The Traveling Wilburys' album Volume One did win a Grammy for best rock album. Their second album was titled Vol. 3.

TOTALLY AGREE

And it's rare I find anyone else who feels this way

Her mom told her about Wolff’s demo [of "Straight Up"], calling it “the most God-awful thing you’ve ever heard.” Still, her mom played Abdul the cassette. “It was like an eight-track recording with someone plunking on a computer and singing notes that I’ve never heard of, like in-between notes. It was strange. We were laughing and crying, and my mother threw it in the trash can. And I dug it out of the trash can and said, ‘There’s something really cool about this song.’”

Shoulda left it in the trash!

Straight Up was written by Elliot Wolff, who also wrote Paula Abdul's 1989 number-one hit Cold Hearted and co-wrote A'me Lorain's 1990 #9 hit Whole Wide World. More than 30 artists have recorded Straight Up. Scott Bradlee's Postmodern Jukebox featuring Sara Niemetz, Olivia Kuper Harris & Vonzell Solomon recorded the song for their Jazz Me Outside album, released February 14, 2018. Here is a live performance. They do their very best Manhattan Transfer impression:

I didn't think much of the song when it came out.
Those were my Van Halen & Scorpions days.

The song was on the radio a lot at this furniture shop that I used to work at when I was in high school.
I always thought that the "woogida woogida woogida" sound just before the chorus was always funny to me.

I loved working at that shop.
Even though I didn't think much of the song at the time,
it was the right time and the right place for it.

Kenny/Dolly "Islands In The Stream"
Lionel "All Night Long"
Michael/Paul "Say Say Say"

CANDIDATES
Yes "Owner Of A Lonely Heart"
Culture Club "Karma Chameleon"

LATER
