I've become a sports talk radio caller.

That's who I am now.

And it's 100% Eagles related. I like the guy who does the overnight shift from 2:00 to 5:00, John Johnson. I listened to the previous guy. Big Daddy Graham my entire life until he died and John Johnson took over.

Kind of fun to call sports talk radio.

I did a bit of research and overall 94 WIP in Philly is the third most listened to station in the country and maybe the second only behind New York obviously and then sometimes behind Chicago. It's crazy. We beat LA.

I bet Channel could cite stats for me. I was specifically talking about the morning show that new morning show and the old morning show. Channel is our guy with radio knowledge.

Anyway, it's fun to call WIP and I record the calls and I bet I can turn them into some sort of audio file and post them here because I'm going to just sound like an idiot I don't care. What's the difference between me writing my fucking thoughts about the Eagles or you hearing it in an audible fashion?

Any of you call sports talk radio?

Also my whole life it was 610 WIP on the am dial and then once I move down here somehow they managed to get on FM. And by the way 94.1 FM was Stearns channel my whole life in Philly so it's kind of cool. I don't listen to Stern anymore but WIP took his place.

Apparently it's really easy to share audio links from the Google recorder thing. Tell me if you guys can hear this.

Also I'm pretty sure I just created a link to that one call but never done that before. So if you all can hear any of the other shit I've got recorded let me know so I can delete all of this.

I completely gave up listening to sports talk radio once it became all become increasingly stupid hot takes. Skip Bayless is the worst. I used to listen to Mike & Mike way back in the day.

There are several ways to measure a radio station's audience. The most common are cume – "cumulative audience," how many individuals listen for at least five minutes during a given time period, usually a week or four weeks – and AQH, the average quarter-hour share of listeners age 6+ between 6 AM and midnight. The "share" is based on the number of people listening to the radio. In the most recent Nielsen Audio ratings, adult contemporary "106.7 Lite-FM" WLTW in New York City had the highest cume, 4,127,900. Classic hits "Majic 105.7" WMJI in Cleveland had the highest share, 19.3%. The sports-talk station with the highest share, 11.9%, is "100.3 "K-Fan" KFXN in Minneapolis.

In Philadelphia, WIP is the third-most-listened to station behind adult contemporay "B101.1" WBEB and adult R&B WDAS. Here is WIP, February 5, 2025. They're talking about an upcoming football game that will include a Philadelphia team.

The Los Angeles area has four sports-talk stations. In the most recent Nielsen Audio ratings for Los Angeles, KLAC – the flagship station of the Dodgers, Clippers, Chargers and UCLA men's football and basketball –ranks 30th with a 0.9 share. That means that out of every 1,000 people listening to the radio between 6 AM and midnight, only nine are listening to KLAC. Spanish-language sports-talk KWKW is tied for 39th with a 0.1 share.

ESPN affiliate KSPN is the flagship station of the Angels, Kings, Rams, Lakers and USC Trojans but does not subscribe to Nielsen – so the ratings (released every four weeks) never include KSPN. KLAA 830 carries games of the Angels, Raiders and UC Irvine Anteaters but their rayings are what is called "belo the line" – less than a 0.1 share. "Fox Sports 1350" in San Bernardino has a 0.2 share in the Riverside-San Bernardino market but never shows up in the Los Angeles ratings.

You're talking about national dudes though. I'm talking about local sports talk like that's only in the city you care about.

I don't know channel. I kind of looked into this and they were saying that on an average day the morning show in Philly gets about 350,000 daily listeners to the morning show. Francesca and Richie, I mean I listen to it most mornings at least for like 5 or 10 minutes.... I listen to their afternoon. Show more Hugh Douglas is awesome but anyway I'm getting sidetracked.

If you take out the national syndicated broadcasts from whatever City and the cities that just broadcast to whatever City they're in and I know everybody syndicated now with like the internet, but you know what I mean. What's the list of the top five sports talk radio stations?

common are cume

Come on man. Keep it appropriate. We all commonly cume now and then when we're feeling that way. But like we're talking about serious stuff now.

In the 80s I listened to Jays Talk after the Jays games on 590 THE FAN. Got bored with it eventually. Never really got into it as a general listening habit. And I am sure this is not the case with you Koop but most of the people calling in to these stations are complete morons.

Elvis Duran's morning show on "Z100" WHTZ – his real name is Barry Brian Cope – averages more than 600,000 daily listeners in the New York City market. His show is syndicated to 81 stations nationwide and is heard by approximately 8,000,000 people each week.

How does that have anything to do with what we're talking about? I read that the Philly WIP morning show gets about 300 to 350 per day listeners. I don't want to do the math or whatever, but if you consider how big each city is locally, 350 towards 600 is probably about the same right?

I'm talking about non-syndicated shit like local sports talk. And yes everybody has syndicated these days like I listen to WIP everyday on audible on my Alexa devices and on my phone. But I'm talking about like over the air broadcast.

You don't have a local sports channel in New Orleans? New Orleans is a big freaking market. They must have a local channel.
Oh that's interesting cuz for me growing up listening to WIP is what you did. Like I was the weirdo who listened to Stern all my other guy friends would always listen to WIP.

And I would listen to WIP too but just not in the morning with Angela cataldi.

And I guess WIP won because I'm still listening now and I'm fucking 41 years old. I never listen to national radio. Unless it's Monday night football or something and I'm in the car.

New Orleans is home to the NFL Saints, the NBA, the Gold rugby team, the Jesters semi-pro soccer team and the Crescent City Football Club semi-pro soccer team. There are four sports-talk stations in the New Orleans area, none of which Aaron listens to:

WWWL 1350/W225CZ 92.9, New Orleans
WSLA 1560/W230CR 93.9, Slidell LA
WPMO 1580, Pascagoula MS
WRKN 106.1, Picayune MS

JHDK says he didn't like Angela Cataldi. I wonder if she is any relation to Angelo Cataldi, who was part of the WIP morning show from 1988 until February 17, 2021, when he retired. His autobiography, LOUD: How A Shy Nerd Came To Philadelphia & Turned Up The Volume In The Most Passionate Sports City In America, was published in December 2023.

Rich Eisen, Jim Rome, Dan Patrick, The Fabulous Sports Babe ('memba her?!) and Bob Valvano (overnight on ESPN Radio more often than not) were my big listens back then. Nowadays I'll occasionally tune in to one of the Sirius channels, but that's pretty much it. Stephen A. Smith had a show on ESPN radio for a while where he wasn't trying to be Screamin' A. Smith, and was actually quite good. Wish he'd get back to that.

My 'Not a chance in hell' list: Mad Dog, Pat McAfee (Seriously?!), Colin Cowherd, pretty much anything Barstool Sports.
