Hello America. Spotify here.

July 14, 2011, 11:11

We’re excited to let you know that today we’re bringing Spotify to the US.
This is a great day for anyone who loves music in the US and, of course, a real milestone for us at Spotify. I’m proud of the fantastic team who have been working tirelessly to bring what we think is the best possible music service to our friends in the US.

I just signed up for it and I have to say... man that software on the iPhone is slick and smooth. I am testing it out right now, but early indications are I won't be using MOG anymore. The other thing is that I will likely go to just a plus plan on the Slacker if at all.

You already decided to leave MoG for Spotify? What do you like about Spotify?

Actually I had already left MOG last month. I am still just not happy enough with Slacker, so trying it for me was a no brainer. What do I like about it the software is very stable and doesn't lag, ability to create playlist on a mobile device, ability to add or remove songs from playlist on a mobile devices. None of which was available on MOG. I still think MOG is a tad bit better than Slacker in terms of Library and software, but then MOGS software doesn't do anything but play music, so its no wonder. Slacker's software implementation was just not every well though out. The on-demand service makes you jump through hoops to do the most basic thing.

Spotify has come to the table with 15 millions cachable songs in there library. I've just canceled my Slacker back down to just plus.

The software seems pretty refined, but I guess they've had it for awhile considering they were programming for iOS in the UK market already. Bottom line is none of them are going to be perfect, but thus far I think this one is going to work nicely for me. I am going to give it a fully 30 day run and if something changes, you know I'll post about it.

I don't let any grass grow under my feet!

I do indeed and would be glad to send you one. PM me the email address you want me to use and I'll fire on over to you.

Assume this is US only?

I am really not sure, it is called Spotify US, but then a lot of US companies cover Canada too. I'll see if I can see anything on the web site.

Update:

Digital music service Spotify arrived in the United States on Thursday, aiming its addictive, free song service at American listeners in the hope that they will then pay for more features, just as nearly 2 million have done in Europe.

But a spokesperson for the company said there is no “news or timescales on a launch” for Canada.

I posted this over on Slacker's forum, just thought some of you maybe interested.

I signed up for a Premium account today. Heck I've tried all the others so why not.

My early observations are as follows:

Library wise they have some gaps, but I suspect that will be fixed pretty quickly since they are just launching.

iOS App is smooth as a fat babies behind. No lagging, very easy to create and edit playlist on the fly. Don't have to be playing a playlist to edit it. The one thing though that Slacker has is that you can see if you've already added a song to the library, but not so with Spotify. The software though is well designed and very well thought-out for ease of use.

The Windows and Mac Software works great without having to use the web browser and is honestly amazing in comparison to Slacker web based interface stuck in that small window in the middle of your browsers.

I can use Spotify on all my iOS devices, Mac/Win Software and download my playlist to every single one of them. You aren't limited to one device. You can't stream but on one device, but you can download/cache your playlist. There is no native iPad App so advantage Slacker there. But Spotify has the advantage with being able to download in-demand music to all my iOS devices and my desktops, with full Mac support.

Radio stations, again Slacker has the advantage and it will be the reason I will continue my plus subscription.

Not available in Canada vs Slacker which is. Doesn't impact me!

Slacker's $3.99 per month with radio station caching (unlimited devices) and customization in my opinion still gives them a big advantage over Spotify. Really they have no answer for this.

Overall I am really liking the service, but time will tell. My biggest complaint with Slacker right now is the lagging slow application, which you only notice if you have the Premium subscription. If you use the free or plus service you don't see the lagging between playlist, stations and albums.

I think Slacker is in pretty good shape to compete here. The one thing Spotify is going to do is market, market, market. Slacker doesn't market at all that I see. The release a few PR's here and there, but that is it and that is a big mistake.

I could probably see getting a plus subscription on Slacker and Premium on Spotify. I like Slacker's interface and station selection, plus caching, but the Spotify player on Mac is a KICK to use. Once I get all my subscriptions lined up again, and between Spotify, Slacker and my iTunes collection, plus all the stuff I get for free, I'll be very happy. Although the two companies that need to watch their back more than Slacker are Pandora (which I may just delete from my phone) and SiriusXM. Satellite Radio 2.0 better be a grand slam if they expect to beat services like Spotify.

So I've only just started playing with the desktop app on my Mac - is there any way to browse rather than search for something? Not likely to find anything new if I can't poke around - and their "Top Lists" aren't full of anything that I particularly find appealing.

That is probably where I am going to land. For me the chief consideration is how good the iOS app is and right now I can tell you hands down the Spotify app kicks the shit out of Rhapsody, Napster, MOG and Slacker.

Rhapsody has a good web site though for exploring like Jef was talking about, whereas Spotify tends to depend on fans to create playlist because there are tons of Spotify enable web sites with tons of playlist. I've found some pretty darn cool ones.

I think for Sat Radio will still be where I get turned on to newer stuff, but will then use Spotify to continue to add and create a really create playlist for listening while on the go. Slacker plus at $3.99 for there radio stations well worth it too. MOG also does a good job with the web site and they also send out new artist releases each week via email.

Right now though if I had to choose, I'd let Sirius XM go. Fortunately I don't have to.

Heh - I ran across Trent Reznor's "(real men wear) Paracute Pants" 80's playlist the other day. :)

I am having one issue with the iOS Spotify App, each time my dock in my vehicle loses power the App crashes. Tested this on both iPod Touch and iPhone, it does it on both. I have reported it to Spotify. It will be interesting to see how quickly they respond to these type issues and actually fix them.

I guess not many people use there iPhones and iPod Touch's while docked to listen as I do in my vehicle.

Its a minor setback, but of course when it happens your playlist starts over again so you are likely going to hear songs repeated that if the app didn't crash you wouldn't.

I went months we Slacker crashing occasional, so I will give them the opportunity to fix it.

I see Spotify just dropped another update, I am anxious to see if this fixed my issue, though it says it was just to remove links to signing up offline.

My Slacker subscription ran out today, I was on the Premium Plan! I have resubscribed, but now just on the Plus. I will once again be able to cache all my devices.

So, for now even with the crashing issue I am going to hang with Spotify for my in-demand subscription.

One thing they need to fix, at least on the Mac client - not sure about others - is the ability to play though a searched list of tunes as if it were a playlist/album listing. Seems I can listen to a single song, or go listen to an album. Having to make a playlist before I'm sure I'm going to like something enough to bother making a playlist is irritating - so is manually playing each song.

Or am I missing something?
