it sounds like you roll the dice more than I do, and delve into the "general sea" of music, which I don't do.
Exactly. I've heard new songs this year by Sabrina Carpenter, Chappell Roan, Kendrick Lamar, Benson Boone, Hozier, Billie Eilish, Bruno Mars (w/ Rose) and yes I've heard the Shaboozey song (one of my cousins was talking about how much she likes it over the summer). I do it just to see if there's anything new that's good in the pop world. One in a few hundred I might end up liking. But I do it mostly to keep up with trends and stay a lil current.

I also play Whatsamusic a lot, so I hear a shit-ton of Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus, Megan Thee Stallion, Doja Cat, Olivia Rodrigo and other stuff I'll never like even slightly. But I'm definitely exposed to it.

I do this with the Spectrum (but not enough lately). If I want to know what's going on with Nathaniel Rateliff, U2, Maggie Rogers, The Killers, Pearl Jam and Leon Bridges, I have to hear it there. And maybe I'll hear something unexpected I'll like (TBH, any new releases from some of the artists I mentioned is unexpected). But in order to get enlightened, I have to put up with Mt. Joy, Hozier, Noah Kahan, Vance Joy, Marcus Mumford, and about 100 other soccer mom bands. Plus I get to hear the same "leading edge" songs I already hear on XMU. So it's a lot of work for a small payoff.

It's almost better to just lookup their playlists on xmplaylist.com, and dial-up the interesting ones.

System Of A Down‘s Daron Malakian has responded to Nikki Glaser’s Golden Globes joke about the band.

Glaser – who served as the 2025 Golden Globes host last night (January 5) – went on to introduce the legendary actress Glenn Close who was set to present the award for Best Motion Picture – Drama. While introducing the actor and listing her accolades, Glaser took the time to sneak in a mention of the Armenian-American heavy metal band.

“To present our next award please welcome, from Netflix’s Back in Action, three-time Golden Globe Award winner, Hollywood icon and former drummer for System of a Down, Glenn Close,” Glaser said.

Malakian – the guitarist and second vocalist of System Of A Down – took to his official Instagram account to share a video of the moment and to add on to the comedian’s joke.

“Bet you didn’t know!!!!Bet you didn’t know!!!!!Somewhere between our first drummer and John, Glenn Close was tearing shit up on the drums for us!,” read the caption of the post.

That'll teach him to tour with Hanson

On a more serious note, this is sad. He's a great songwriter and I've been a fan since the 90s
A song from Matthew Sweet just came up on my Winamp and I've been waitin....er, wondering how he's doing. Found this:

December 6th, 2024
by Catherine Lyons for Matthew Sweet, Organizer

A note from Matthew:

I was colder than I’ve ever been and an icy sweat came from every pore. Then I heard a deafening white noise in both my ears growing, and growing and growing in volume, and my eyes started to scramble like eggs in a pan. “Call me an ambulance” I called out to Evan who was just checking us in to the Toronto hotel after a ten hour drive from Baltimore. Then I was in an ambulance and I heard a man yell, “Sir you’ve had a stroke.” I didn’t know what it meant. It seemed unreal as much of my life has. It’s hard to start here without saying how touched and humbled I am by the success of my GoFundMe page. My future would be gone without it. I stand a chance it is as simple as that. I should first of all thank Russell Carter, Cathy Lyons and everyone at Russell Carter Artist Management, because it was their idea to reach out for help. As I said before, I did not know what was happening to me at the time as I didn’t really know what a stroke was and I was alone in Canada to take in the fact that I could only see double and that I was now numb on the left side of my body and face and arm and legs and feet . I just didn’t realize how much I’d lost as I waited ten days to be given clearance from the doctors at Toronto Western Hospital, where I lay in the stroke unit waiting to be released. “Do you know where you are? What is the date? What is the year? What is your name? Where are you?” These are the things I was asked every day - “Push up with your right leg. Push up with your left leg.” I noticed there were bruises all over my left arm because it was hanging there, unable to move on its own. The only way they would let me travel back to the states was with a medical crew, on an airplane and straight into a rehabilitation hospital. The cost of all these things was already astronomical. What is mankind doing? To not make these things available as part of our culture everywhere. My wife Lisa dutifully prepared for me to enter into Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital in Omaha. It was a Madonna in Lincoln, NE where my mother spent the last years of her life, so I knew it somewhat, but I found out so much more about it and the people who work there; the Nurses, the Physical Therapists, the Occupational Therapists, the Vision Therapists, the Speech Therapists, the Doctors, the Aides and all those who made it possible for me to undergo the level of care that I did at Madonna until I came to be discharged early in December. I was given what’s called the Madonna Spirit Award by all my caregivers upon my release. “My God, I’m the least deserving ever of this award,” I thought to myself. Because I did not believe in myself, I did not understand what was happening and what these people were trying to do for me and in that way the people of Madonna are a lot like you. I was never a very good friend in my life. I never really understood others very well, as I was born bipolar and I was struggling just to stay afloat in my own body, but that’s another story. As I learned to walk, bathe, strengthen my legs, learn what hard work really was, I cried many times at my terrible fate and yet I also was so thankful for the fate I had in life, because it was a wonderful fate, and I was so lucky and found everything I wanted again and again and again. Not too many people I suppose can say that. But you have taught me what care is. Caring about others, caring about what can be done, caring about what happens. In a way, I never thought anything mattered but caring does matter and of that I now am very aware. I am very aware as I watch my wife. Lisa has to become my caregiver for the rest of our lives. I shudder to think of her fate, there is nothing I could have wanted less to happen to our future and yet happen it did and deal with it we must and we are doing the best we can day by day. I’ve lived through the day where I realized I may never play guitar again, I’ve lived through the day where I realized I may never draw a straight line again or enjoy the pasttime that developed over just the last year of my life, painting with fountain pens and coloring with dip pens and ink. I understand now what it means to need to reinvent oneself, when the self you knew before is gone, you have no other choice, you either quit or you keep going and so I feel I must keep going, and I feel a great burden to do so with such incredible support that you, many of whom I do not know, have given me. I must just say thank you to you for giving me this help. This hope I cannot feel whether I could have had on my own. I will try to make music. I will try to. I will try to make art. I will try to express myself, because that is all I have ever known and all that has ever brought me joy, throughout a life filled with more sadness than anyone could know what to do with, than any of us know what to do with, and that’s life. May you all today find a glimmer of hope and love and a future to strive toward the way you have helped me find it, every one of you.
With love and gratitude,
Matthew Sweet 12/2024

Thanks for digging that up Sad. I've been wondering how he's doing.

That's such a sad story. I always liked his music. I saw him play a local club in the 90's and they put on a very good show.
Hopefully he can get back to playing guitar again.

So cool to see this!!

The Discogs Community’s Favorite Albums of 2024

The community has spoken. At the end of 2024, Discogs asked followers on X, Instagram, and Facebook to tell us their favorite albums. Collectors chimed with hundreds of different releases from dozens of genres. The final list includes everything from punk to alt-pop, to modern MPB (Música Popular Brasileira) to cosmic death metal. While best-selling and most collected lists give insight into popularity, these are the records that the community couldn’t stop spinning.

#1 Songs of a Lost World - The Cure
The real battle for this chart was the fight for second place. The Cure‘s comeback after 16 years away from the studio earned three times the votes as second place. Despite a November release, Songs of a Lost World has spent more time on the record player than January releases for many. After a few listens, it’s easy to hear why.

#2 Romance - Fontaines D.C.
#3 Imaginal Disk - Magdalena Bay
#4 Brat - Charli XCX
#5 Absolute Elsewhere - Blood Incantation
#6 No Name - Jack White
#7 Only God Was Above Us - Vampire Weekend
#8 No Title As Of 13 February 2024 28,340 Dead - Godspeed You Black Emperor!
#9 Lives Outgrown - Beth Gibbons
#10 Cool World - Chat Pile

That's like a mashup between the indie top albums list and a few others. Neat.

They have 2 shows in Toronto next summer. I do recall them saying that once Neil died that Rush was over since he was such a big part of the band. I guess their bank accounts have gotten a bit low.

I'm glad that they are playing together again.
I'd like to see them, but the shows will sell out instantly and will be expensive.
There's 2 nights in Cleveland on the tour.
My buddy checked into it and the VIP package tickets are $1200.

I saw them with Peart 13 times, including their final tour.
The new drummer is excellent, but premium dollar tickets, I won't feel too bad if I don't catch the show.

Old news, but needed a place to drop it. Interesting music story.

Listening to old Stern from 2/11/03. It was revealed that day that the reason Guns N Roses tour was canceled was Axl was pouting over 'Stern associate' Doug Goodstein's review of their Madison Square Garden show the night before.

Blender has discovered that Rose sulked and was depressed following the previous night's triumphant return to a sold-out Madison Square Garden in New York City.

After a bravura [BRILLIANT] performance, a giddy Rose stayed up all night in his excitement to read positive reviews the next morning — and then tuned in to 'The Howard Stern Show'.

Stern's associate, Doug Goodstein, gave a thumbs down to the MSG show, mocking the singer's braided hair, claiming that Rose needed oxygen between songs and was lip-synching and comparing him to Michael Jackson.

With a helicopter waiting on the rooftop of his hotel to take him on a brief 40-minute flight to Philadelphia for that night's show at the First Union Center, a dispirited Rose refused to budge.

Venue representatives boosted security to avoid a repeat of the riot that occurred when GN'R failed to turn up for their opening-night show in Vancouver on November 7.

Promoter Clear Channel and venue managers Comcast-Spectator set a firm deadline of 10:45pm for Rose to say whether or not he would show up to play. Rose's longtime manager, Doug Goldstein, reached at Rose's New York hotel room, glumly reported 'He's not coming.'

At 11:15, the 15,000 strong audience was told the show was not going to happen 'due to illness in the band.' Fans were asked not to take their anger out on the staff or the facility. Some of them threw chairs and attacked the lighting, sound, and video crews, but no arrests or injuries were reported.
